Indoor swimming pools offer a fantastic space for relaxation, fitness, and fun - but without proper humidity control, they can also create serious challenges for both comfort and building integrity. Moisture evaporation from the pool surface leads to elevated humidity levels that, if unmanaged, can damage structures, degrade interior finishes, and negatively impact air quality.
Maintaining the right environment isn't just about preserving the building - it's about ensuring that swimmers can enjoy the space in comfort. The ideal relative humidity for indoor pool halls is between 55% and 65%. Anything outside this range can lead to discomfort for bathers and potential long-term issues for the building.
One of the most common and damaging issues in indoor pools and spas is as water evaporates from the pool or spa, it raises humidity levels in the air. This moisture then settles on cooler surfaces such as windows, walls, and ceilings eventually leading to visible condensation, mould growth, and even structural weakening or failure if left unaddressed.
Uncontrolled moisture and humidity can cause a range of problems in indoor pool environments, including:
Corrosion of poolside fittings and equipment
Frequent and costly redecoration
Damage to plaster, paint, or timber finishes
Unpleasant, damp, and uncomfortable atmosphere
Growth of mould, mildew, and bacteria
Fogging and misting on glass and other surfaces
The best way to tackle humidity in indoor pools is with a purpose-built dehumidification system. The Dantherm range of wall and floor mounted dehumidifiers is specifically designed for indoor pool environments, providing effective humidity control and energy recovery.
Operating on the heat pump principle, the Dantherm DH35, DH65, and DH120 models recirculate air within the pool hall - extracting moisture while simultaneously delivering warm, dry air back into the space. This not only helps to maintain a comfortable atmosphere but also reduces condensation and keeps energy costs low by minimising the need for external air extraction.
Dantherm dehumidifiers are engineered to be energy-efficient. By removing moisture from the air, they recover latent heat and use it to warm the air being returned to the pool hall. Thanks to heat pump technology, for every 1kW of power used, up to 2.5kW of heat can be recovered and reused - providing free heating for your indoor pool environment.
